think that's wrong. but if you look at, for example, the state that the president was in today, nevada, there is a republican hispanic governor in the state, very popular, brian sandoval. you look at new mexico republican hispanic governor susana martinez. part of the problem republicans have communicating to hispanics is the total utter toxicity of the republican brand, the washington, d.c. brand. but once you're able to break out of that d.c. brand, republicans are able to put an imprint that is appropriate for nevada or new mexico on the party. and you're finding success there. now, i don't think that the numbers that you talked about on those issues are permanent. republicans when we just finish the presidential election where we were doomed by comments like the 47%, we need to have a message that reaches out to every american, is about empowerment, is about climbing the socio-economic ladder, about revitalizing the american middle class that has been in decline. we have to talk about those things. we have to have plans that are grounded in reality to deal with the problems that am

reid does not want to fwe through tgo thr gyrations on gun policy because frankly he comes from nevada. harry reid has had a very high record from the nra, very high ranking from the nra. any of us who have been to nevada know that there is a very big gun culture there and the other surrounding states. frankly, the two senators from nevada and idaho where there is great gun culture have just as much votes as the two senators from california or from some other northeastern states. and i think it's important that the white house listen to some of these voices coming from some of the more rural areas like an idaho, like a nevada, because they vote, too. and we need to make them part of the debate. i've been very concerned to -- sorry. >> they'll clearly be listened to. that's not the point. the issue is how you build consensus for real gun -- >> have you seen folks from out west from the rural areas be part of the debates on the sunday shows? >> absolutely. ? i've seen a lot of urban mayor, but not the folks from the west. gr then you should listen up to what center joe manchin had to say

nevada and is a gun owner, obviously it's hard for him but he's not up for re-election for four years and that if he runs again. there are many democrats up in 2014 from pro gun states who will be really vulnerable voting on something an assault weapons ban. i think what -- sort of a back door escape for the senate will be to put this pressure on the floor that would allow for an assault weapons ban but leave it open to amendment, in other words, it could be weakened easily by other amendments on the floor. it will kind of give cover to democrats who will be vulnerable from this, but the ultimate result will be, i think, just universal background checks. that's the maximum you're going to see here just for political reasons. and i think that even if the future, it's going to be hard, even if the congress is democratic on both sides because democrats are vulnerable on this issue as well as republicans. >> our power panel, thanks for being patient where me. i appreciate it. i appreciate your time. of course, we are following this breaking news elsewhere today coming out of massachusetts
